Immersion: an unexpected set
project
Description
Immersion: an unexpected set was a sculptural structure, a golden mirror, that on the 17th of December 2023, the last day of the Mystery 1 CLOSING: OPENING, A Ceremony (15 to 17 December 2023), began a descent to finally submerge beneath the surface of the sea until that same evening, reversing the gesture of the Opening Ceremony, where a mythical entity emerged from the Gulf of Elefsina in February, and, thus, to carry its message to the Underworld. The cycle was completed. Persephone returned.
A magical object, a mirror, which, as it slowly sank, took with it the image of any reflection (landscape, people, light, buildings - a fleeting depiction of the world above); a gesture that lasted quietly for a day.
It was an action that coincidentally reflected the triptych of the Eleusinian Mysteries: Things acted, Things said, Things shown.
The sculptural structure four meters in diameter bore the inscription-oracle "I am surely not What should be, but I am a face of what is missing but Is". The action of diving the sculpture in the Eleusinian gulf was carried out using a crane-like lifting machine in the sea.
The gesture of immersion began on the morning of the third day of the three-day Closing Ceremony, marking the official inauguration of the Canteen art hub, to be completed in the evening as the official closing of the celebrations through a spectacular lightshow by the international distinguished lighting designer Eleftheria Deko under the musical accompaniment of Niki Kokkolis' saxophone.
