Mystery 189 Myths and Legends of Elefsina: The Mysteries of Clay is a series of pottery workshops, that were carried out at various places of Elefsina in June, July, November and December 2023 by the recognised artist Athanasios Katsaras. It was a multi-dimensional and multi-layered project concerning Greek pottery that included artistic production, research work, public participation, installations in public space and educational activities. The aim was both to enhance the city of Elefsina’s cultural self-awareness based on actual instances of cultural production and to enhance the city’s role as a permanent hub of artistic creation, a concern of the entire Downtown Creatives programme in the creative economy sector.
In December 2023, an interactive city game, called Escape from Hades, was organised in the city of Elefsis.
In April 2024, the project met its end with a speech and an exhibition dedicated to Greek ceramics by Athanasios Katsaras at Cine Eleusis. The artist presented his research on the great ancient Greek ceramic tradition through the constructional approach of three Elefsinian amphorae and other selected exhibits from the city’s Archaeological Museum. At the Cine Eleusis and a collection of vases, tools and methods of manufacture and he gave a live demonstration of application.
