MYSTERIES of TRANSITION

Mystery 91 Magnetic Dance

project
Description
Mystery 91 Magnetic Dance was an action that explored the relationship between technology and culture through an original digital dance performance created in collaboration with artists from Greece, Japan, and France. It premiered in Greece on Saturday, October 21, and Sunday, October 22, 2023, at the X-Bowling Art Center. The narrative of the performance was based on well-known Hellenistic and Japanese myths: the myth of Echo and Narcissus from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and the myth of 'Izutsu' (wellhead) from the eponymous work of Japanese playwright Zeami. These two works explored themes of gender and identity in the broader context of the transition between the directly perceivable world and the worlds of the Imaginary and the Transitional. Dancers Jun Takahashi, Asagio Hisai, Natali Mandila and Justine Goussot used sensors to create live sound and music through their movements in works by composers Iannis Zannos, Haruka Hirayama and Hideaki Isobe. The performance also featured remote participation from Japan by Yoshimitsu Yoshiya and 3ducksDADA, a group of young artists based in Tokyo, in an innovative technological setting of live collaboration over the internet. In addition to conventional teleconferencing methods, the work utilised original technologies that translated the body movements of the artists into data for the production of sound and imagery using open-source software. The technology for the project was developed within the framework of the HAL research project of the Department of Audovisual Arts at the Ionian University and was presented there for the first time in autonomous, large-scale works. Simultaneously, in the city of Elefsina, was available the audio walk 'Fevgousa', featuring the soundscapes of the city and sounds from the performance of the Mystery 91 Magnetic Dance. The audio walk was geolocated by the Akoo.o Team (Nikolas Boumbaris, Dana Papachristou, Giorgos Samantas, and Sofia Grigoriadou) and was available through the Echoes.xyz app throughout the event. On Sunday, October 22nd at the Old Municipality of Elefsina, the project presented a collaborative work with live video, sound and data interaction between Tokyo and Elefsina, with 3ducksDADA, a group of Japanese and Chinese artists organising an event in the Sanya neighbourhood of Tokyo, aiming to bridge the working-class neighbourhoods of Sanya and Eleusis. This was followed by a panel discussion between the artists and media theorists and digital arts specialists from Greece, Japan and internationally. Τhe production of the project was coordinated by To Aesthate Research Center. Mystery 91 Magnetic Dance was implemented with the support of the EU Japan Fest. The final performance was preceded by stages of preparation and collaboration in Greece and Japan, including an open rehearsal on April 29, 2022, as a parallel event during Μystery 29 Spring Forward 2022 in Elefsina.
