Description
The 2023 European Capital of Culture Eleusis in collaboration with the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, and with its exclusive sponsorship, produced the dedicated bilingual publication For Her. This is a unique anthology of texts about Elefsina, published by Menandros Publications, in a limited edition of 700 copies. Emblematic foreign and Greek thinkers (poets, writers and theatre people, historians, orators and philosophers and clergymen) have written throughout the centuries about this sacred and mythical city. Texts from Greek and Roman antiquity converse with those of the 17th century up to the present day. Intellectual figures such as Aeschylus, Seneca, Crinagoras and Marcus Aurelius "open a dialogue" with Shakespeare, Voltaire, Goethe and Hegel, but also with contemporary pilgrims - among them Flaubert, Virginia Woolf, Hauptmann, and closer to us in the 20th century with Pound, Sicilian, Artaud, Camus, Miller, Seferis, Ritsos. Some 200 texts, signed by 150 authors, introduce the timeless gaze of the Others on Elefsina, and are presented in chronological order according to the year of their writing, either in full or in fragmentary form. An anthology, commemorative and collectible, as a gesture of love towards the city of Elefsina, a gathering of recorded human intellect across the centuries. An attempt to attribute to it the elusive, radiant piece of mythology that rightfully belongs to it.
In May and June 2023, two separate presentations of the bilingual dedicated publication -For Her- were organized, the first in Piraeus and the second in Elefsina, open to the general public, with readings of the anthology's texts.
