Mystery 189 Myths and Legends of Elefsina: The Mysteries of Clay was a series of pottery workshops, that were carried out at various places of Elefsina in June, July, November and December 2023 by the recognised artist Athanasios Katsaras. It was a multi-dimensional and multi-layered project concerning Greek pottery that included artistic production, research work, public participation, installations in public space and educational activities. The aim was both to enhance the city of Elefsina’s cultural self-awareness based on actual instances of cultural production and to enhance the city’s role as a permanent hub of artistic creation, a concern of the entire Downtown Creatives programme in the creative economy sector.
The project of June 2023 took place as part of the SYNOIKISMOI A FESTIVAL, while the proramme of November and December 2023 was carried out with the kind sponsorship of TITAN A.E.
The project was implemented based on two axes:
i. GET YOUR HANDS IN THE MUD: Education and original creation workshops for adults and children, interested in being introduced to the world of ceramics
ii. PROCESSES OF RESEARCH & ARTISTIC PRODUCTION: Workshops of original ceramic creation for students of related subjects, which were inspired by exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Elefsina and by archaic and Byzantine ceramics.
In December 2023, an interactive city game, called Escape from Hades, was organised in the city of Elefsis.
In the context of IN SITU REALITIES Eleusis Documentary Festival, a video-documentary including the Mystery 189 Myths and Legends of Elefsina: The Mysteries of Clay (SMALL SCREEN 1, MYSTERIES: One Year in One Our).
In April 2024, the project met its end with a speech and an exhibition by Athanasios Katsaras at Cine Eleusis.
