21 km, a Day on the road to Elefsina

project
Description
The 21 km, a Day on the road to Elefsina was part of the two-day Opening Ceremony, and was organized by Michael Marmarinos and coordinated by Marina Koutarelli's Communication Lab. The event included a social media campaign with artists, athletes and celebrities inviting the public to Eleusis, the realization of the half-marathon from the Archaeological Site of Kerameikos via the Sacred Way and the Archaeological Site of Eleusis to the Old Olive Mill of Eleusis, and concluded with a digital presentation of the event as a case study for sports clubs to implement sports activities with a cultural dimension. For the realization of the Day on the road to Elefsina, invited walkers from all over Greece walked the entirety of the Sacred way, traversing the geography of Attica and connecting Athens with Elefsina, while highlighting the historical value of the Sacred way, the oldest known road in Europe, as a symbol of connection and unity throughout the centuries. The Elefsina Health Runners Association welcomed the walkers in their entrance to the city of Elefsina. Unlike a drawn line, a walked line can never be erased (Hamish Fulton). Realizing the route of the Sacred way, the day walkers create a profound imprint connected to the Opening Ceremony and the organization of the European Capital of Culture. The 21 km, a Day on the road to Elefsina was one of the three Processions of individuals, the one who traversed the geographical landscape of Attica, in order to gather at the open-air theatre and the parking lot of the Elefsina Old Oil Mill Factory on the 4th of February 2023.
