Description
The Mystery 48 Constellations was a series of lighting installations scattered throughout the city of Elefsina, which created a bright Constellation of large-scale artistic lighting installations. Part of the Mystery 48 was the Mystery 4 Light Sgraffito.
It is located in Agia Markella Square, the heart of the Chian community in Upper Elefsina, and were the result of a complex participatory design process conducted in eight phases through workshops with local residents.
It draws inspiration by the anthropological and folkloric traditions of the island of Chios and in particular by a medieval technique known as ‘Xysta’ (sgraffito) also developed in Chios. More specifically, this traditional technique to cover house façade which developed in Pyrgi, Chios inspired the group to create this contemporary structure.
In the daylight, ‘xysta’ interact with sunlight creating shadows on the blind side at the back of the installation. At night, ‘xysta’ are lighten up to stand out from the background as dark figures in contrast to certain lightened elements appearing all along the construction. This light installation creates new geometries and diverse movements of lights.
Project Development
The project has been developed progressively from September 2019 onwards through a composite participatory workshop under the title Traces of Light that was carried out in eight phases with the participation of 15 residents of Elefsina. With Beforelight group leading this workshop, the participants became familiar with the different concepts and uses of light, the various possibilities it offers as means of expression and a tool to creatively intervene in an open public space of a neighborhood or of the city. This participatory work is reflected in the light installation looming over Ano Elefsina.
The outcome of this workshop is embodied in the lighting installation in Upper Elefsina. It was inaugurated on December 21, 2020, the longest night of the year (winter solstice), as a gesture of optimism following the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The installation was awarded at the Lighting Awards 2022, in the category ""Artistic Creation (Art & Entertainment)"".
