Mystery 111 Eleusis Terracotta Army
project
Description
Mystery 111 The Terracotta Army of Eleusis by Juan Esteban Sandoval was the Flagship Project of the Labor axis and it was a tribute to the people who work in Elefsina and the broader West Attica region, a huge collective portrait that was made to represent the people who have forged with their work, their physical toil and their lives the current image of the place where they live. It was presented in the form of an exhibition which was inaugurated on Sunday, December 17, as part of the closing ceremony of 2023 Eleusis, Mystery 1 Closing: Opening | A Ceremony, simultaneously marking the new era of the renovated IRIS factory.
Τhe artwork consisted of 2,002 handmade clay helmets that refer to the local workforce and the concept of labour through the eyes of the inhabitants of the Thriasian Plain. In order to create them, Sandoval visited local factories where he had the opportunity to talk with workers, while after an open call to the local community more than 1,000 active or retired workers participated in the project by filling in a questionnaire with their personal information, names of family members, hobbies, preferences. These data, together with words related to the concept of labour collected among the inhabitants of Elefsina, formed the basis for the artist to decorate the helmets using carving and painting techniques. All the helmets were exhibited in a large-scale installation accompanied by a soundscape created exclusively for the project by the international sound artist Giorgos Moraitis to make up a unique experiential experience for the visitor, with multiple references to the industrial environment of the area.
Upon the completion of the exhibition, the clay helmets were distributed to the participants, so that the project would not cease to exist, but remain alive within the city in which it was created and for which it was made.
The work served as the basis for the Mini Documentary by Giorgos Kyvernitis titled Tonnage.
